  66. The following hardware is required to install and use the Virtual
  67. Tablet Interface drivers, utilities and programs:
  68.  
  69.   *  A Summagraphics, CalComp, Kurta or compatible digitizer.
  70.  
  71.   *  An 80286 microprocessor or higher.
  72.   
  73.   *  An EGA display system or higher.
  74.  
  75.   *  MS or PC DOS 2.0 or higher.
  76.  
  77.   *  Microsoft Windows 3.0 or higher.

  80.                     GETTING HELP AND PRODUCT SUPPORT

  85. include your registration number and a full description of the problem

  101.                   INSTALLING FROM WINDOWS OR MS/PC DOS
  102.                   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  104. To run the SETUP.EXE utility from within DOS, enter the command line
  105. below at the DOS prompt:
  106.  
  107.                         WIN [drive:] SETUP.EXE
  108.  
  109. Or, if you are already running Windows, enter the command line below in
  110. response to the Run command from the Program Manager:
  111.  
  112.                           [drive:] SETUP.EXE
  113.  
  114.  
  115.                COPYING FILES FROM THE INSTALLATION DISKS
  116.                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  117.  
  118. The files on the Virtual Tablet Interface installation disks are
  119. compressed and are not usable until expanded. The SETUP.EXE utility
  120. expands the compressed files as it copies them onto your hard disk.
  121. The Windows expand utility and other public domain compression programs
  122. will not work with the installation files since they contain
  123. proprietary compression and error correction codes.
  124.

  126.            REQUIRED DEVICE DRIVERS FOR UTILITIES AND PROGRAMS
  127.            ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  129. You must install the Windows dynamic link library VTABLET.DLL in order
  130. to install and use the Virtual Tablet Editor and Virtual Tablet
  131. Loader. However, you do not have to make it the Windows mouse driver
  132. unless you intend to use your digitizer as the Windows mouse.
  133.  
  134. You must install the DOS device driver VTABLET.SYS in order to use the
  135. AutoDesk Device Interface and DOS segment of the Virtual Tablet Loader.
  136. You should answer 'yes' when asked to update the CONFIG.SYS file if you
  137. install the DOS driver. However, you do not have to update the path
  138. variable for your installation directory depending on the files you
  139. installed or change to the directory before starting the DOS utilities.
  140.

  142.                 CONFLICTS WITH OTHER DIGITIZER SOFTWARE
  143.                 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  144.  
  145. SETUP.EXE may not detect other types of digitizer drivers and software
  146. runnning under Windows or DOS. This will often show up as the error
  147. "Comm Port Missing" reported on the 'Status=' line in the [Virtual
  148. Tablet] section of SYSTEM.INI.
  149.  
  150. If you are installing the Virtual Tablet Interface over other digitizer
  151. software, make sure that software is disabled either before or right
  152. after installation.  Refer to the software manual for those products
  153. and check your AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files.

  156.                         PRINTABLE DOCUMENTATION
  157.                         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  158.  
  159. If you are a registered owner, the manual is provided on disk in
  160. Windows Write format. Choose "Documentation" from within SETUP.EXE to
  161. install, update or remove.
  162.  
  163. The demo version manual must be downloaded separately from the file
  164. VTDOCS.ZIP and expanded using PKZIP. Do not install the manual using
  165. the demo version of SETUP.EXE since the files will be expanded already.
  166.  
  167. The manual is formatted for letter size portrait paper (8 1/2 by 11
  168. inches) and contains numerous bitmap images. For best results, print
  169. the Cover, Contents and Parts 1, 2, 3, 4 on a laser printer.
  170.  
  171.  
  172.                          SAMPLE TEMPLATE FILES
  173.                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  174.  
  175. If you are a registered owner, sample templates are provided on disk
  176. for use with the Virtual Tablet Editor. Choose "Sample Templates" from
  177. within SETUP.EXE to install, update or remove.
  178.  
  179. The demo sample templates must be downloaded separately from the file
  180. VTSAMS.ZIP and expanded using PKZIP -d VTSAMS.ZIP. Do not install the
  181. samples using the demo version of SETUP.EXE since the files will be
  182. expanded already.
  183.  
  184. Sample templates may be edited and compiled from with the Virtual
  185. Tablet Editor and may contain imported images. For best results,
  186. configure your tablet type and print them on a laser printer.
  187.

  189.                  WINDOWS 3.1 COMPATIBILITY AND FEATURES
  190.                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  191.  
  192. NOTE: If you are installing the Interface over an existing digitizer
  193. driver under Windows 3.1, you may receive an error indicating that
  194. VTABLET.DLL cannot load because the comm port is not installed. Under
  195. Windows 3.1, the mouse driver may block the port from access by other
  196. applications (including SETUP.EXE). You must remove or comment out with
  197. a semi-colon (;) the line in the [Boot] section of SYSTEM.INI that
  198. reads 'mouse.drv=' before running SETUP.EXE. You'll lose mouse input
  199. until Windows restarted with VTABLET.DLL as the mouse driver.
  200.  
  201. VTABLET.DLL is compatible with Windows 3.1 whether specified as the
  202. mouse pointer or not. However, there are some subtle differences in its
  203. behaviour depending on how it is loaded...
  204.  
  205. If loaded as the mouse pointer, then the virtual tablet will function
  206. as the mouse input device, execute template pointers and allow tracing.
  207. Use the new Control Panel icon to configure the driver.
  208.  
  209. If loaded as the pen tablet, the virtual tablet will function as the
  210. pen input device, execute template pointers and allow tracing. Use the
  211. new Control Panel drivers applet to configure the driver.
  212.  
  213. If loaded as an installable driver, the virtual tablet will function as
  214. a mouse input device, execute template pointers and allow tracing. Use
  215. the new Control Panel drivers applet to configure the driver.
  216.  
  217. In sum, the Windows driver can do just about anything you want it to
  218. whether you have another input device and how you load it. The best
  219. solution is to load it as the mouse pointer or the pen tablet if you
  220. have Pen Windows. If you have a mouse (and want to use it) but don't
  221. have Pen Windows, try loading it just as an installable driver.
  222.

  224.                    USING THE DOS DRIVER WITH WINDOWS
  225.                    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  226.  
  227. The Windows driver will not load if the DOS driver VTABLET.DLL is open
  228. and in use.  For example, if the AutoDesk Device Interface is running,
  229. you cannot launch Windows with the VTABLET.DLL specified as the mouse
  230. driver. You can launch Windows otherwise, but the Editor and Loader
  231. will not execute.
  232.  
  233. A bug in the real mode Windows kernel currently crashes the system if
  234. the mouse driver cannot be loaded. If this happens, a hard re-boot will
  235. generally be required. This is not so in the 286 and 386 Windows
  236. kernels which simply abort the Windows startup.
  237.  
  238. If your experience problems loading the driver or any other Windows
  239. utility or application, look for an error message in the SYSTEM.INI
  240. file under the section titled [Virtual Tablet] and the key 'Status='.
  241.  
  242.  
  243.                       WINDOWS DRIVER CONFIGURATION
  244.                       ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  245.  
  246. VTABLET.DLL provides the interface between Microsoft Windows and the
  247. digitizing device. The library may be specified as the Windows mouse
  248. driver or loaded independently by Windows applications and supports the
  249. following functions: mouse driver, Pen Windows driver, template manager
  250. and tracing input.  To load the library as the Windows mouse driver,
  251. the [Boot] section of the Windows SYSTEM.INI file must be modified as
  252. follows:
  253.                          mouse.drv=VTABLET.DLL
  254.  
  255. Upon loading, the driver looks in the SYSTEM.INI file under the
  256. [Virtual Tablet] heading for the following information which may be
  257. modified by the user (note some information is required):
  258.  
  259. Comm=n        Use serial communications port n where n is 1 or 2. The
  260.               driver defaults to Comm 1.
  261.  
  262. Filter=n      Filtering of packets to smoooth screen jitter where n is
  263.               between 0 and 5. Zero disables filtering and 5 provides the
  264.               highest level. The default is three.
  265.  
  266. Tablet=n      Select digitizing tablet n corresponding to the tablet
  267.               numbers defined in Appendix D of the User's Guide. The
  268.               driver defaults to tablet 2, a SummaSketch MM1 1201.
  269.  
  270. xExtent=n     Sets the tablets horizontal axis which defaults to a VGA
  271.               screen resolution of 640. The xExtent must be between 0 and
  272.               32,767.  Higher values will map to quicker cursor movement
  273.               on the screen. This value is ignored under Pen Windows.
  274.  
  275. yExtent=n     Sets the tablets vertical axis which defaults to a VGA
  276.               screen resolution of 480. The yExtent must be between 0 and
  277.               32,767. Higher values will map to quicker cursor movement
  278.               on the screen. This value is ignored under Pen Windows.
  279.  
  280. Absolute=n    Sets cursor tracking to absolute or relative positioning.
  281.               A non-zero value sets absolute positioning on, and a zero
  282.               value (default) sets relative positioning off. This value
  283.               is ignored under Windows 3.0 and Pen Windows.
  284.  
  285. ReportRate=n  Sets the report rate speed to n where 0=Slow, 1=Normal
  286.               (default) and 2=Fast. Reports are relative to each
  287.               particular digitizer but can affect system performance
  288.               depending on other peripherals and the mode in which
  289.               Windows is running (see AutoEnhance below). This
  290.               parameter usually need not be changed.
  291.  
  292. AutoEnhance=n Sets AutoEnhance mode detection to n where 0=Off
  293.               (default) and 1=On. When enabled, AutoEnhance mode will
  294.               automatically lower the tablet's report rate under
  295.               Enhanced Mode Windows and leave it alone otherwise. This
  296.               value is ignored under Real and Standard mode Windows and
  297.               cannot set the report rate below 0 (Slow). Set this
  298.               parameter to 1n if your Enhanced Mode sessions are
  299.               sluggish or even crash with many DOS sessions open.
  300.  
  301. VTABLET.DLL will fail to load if the configuration information in the
  302. SYSTEM.INI file is incorrect, or the DOS driver is currently in use.
  303. All errors encountered in loading are written to the SYSTEM.INI file
  304. under the topic [Virtual Tablet] on the line beginning with 'Status='.
  305. Normal loading sets this entry to 'Status=OK'.
  306.  
  307. If VTABLET.DLL is not specified as the mouse driver under Windows 3.0,
  308. cursor movement in templates will be inhibited (though template
  309. commands and tracing functions will continue to work). Under Windows 
  310. 3.1, the driver may be loaded independently of the mouse driver and
  311. continue to manage the screen cursor in conjunction with another
  312. pointing device.

  314. Only one virtual tablet is permitted per system unless one is used for
  315. DOS and the other for Windows. VTABLET.DLL disables the DOS driver
  316. until Windows is exited. The DOS device driver is not required for use
  317. with Windows and therefore need not be loaded thereby saving some
  318. memory in the DOS and Windows environments.

  321.                WINDOWS ENHANCED MODE DRIVER INSTALLATION
  322.                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  323.  
  324. The enhanced mode Windows driver, VTABLET.386, provides a significant
  325. performance improvement and works in conjunction with VTABLET.DLL. The
  326. setup utility will install this driver for you in the [386Enh] section
  327. of SYSTEM.INI by adding the statement 'device=vtablet.386'. This driver
  328. virtualizes the comm port listed under the [Virtual Tablet] section of
  329. SYSTEM.INI and redirects tablet interrupts into VTABLET.DLL regardless
  330. of how it is loaded.
  331.  
  332. If entries in [Virtual Tablet] are incorrect, VTABLET.386 may not load
  333. (nor should VTABLET.DLL) but can not output user diagnostic messages.
  334. The error, after attempting to load VTABLET.DLL, can be found on the
  335. 'Status=' line under [Virtual Tablet] in SYSTEM.INI.

  338.                           CONTROL PANEL APPLET
  339.                           ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  340.  
  341. If you are running Windows 3.1 or later and have installed VTABLET.DLL
  342. as the mouse driver, pen driver or an installable driver, the Control
  343. Panel will display an icon which can be used to configure the driver.
  344. After selecting the icon, the dialog box for the virtual tablet driver
  345. is displayed.
  346.  
  347. The dialog box allows you to configure system pointer functions such as
  348. the tracking and double-click speed, double-click height and width, and
  349. number of mouse trails on the display at any time. The driver's 
  350. filtering value may be also be set. For more information on setting
  351. these values, please refer to the Windows User Guide or text files for
  352. changing WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI that came with your Windows disks.
  353.  
  354. When you have completed your changes, click the OK button or press the
  355. ENTER key and restart Windows to have the changes take effect.
  356. Otherwise, you can cancel your changes by clicking the CANCEL button or
  357. pressing the ESCAPE key. you can return the values to their Windows
  358. defaults at any time by clicking the RESET button.
  359.

  361.                         DOS DRIVER CONFIGURATION
  362.                         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  363.  
  364. VTABLET.SYS provides the interface between applications, utilities and
  365. the digitizer for DOS-based applications including the Autodesk Device
  366. Interface. The invocation in CONFIG.SYS is:
  367.  
  368.            device=VTABLET.SYS [/Cn] [/Tn] [/An] [/Sn]
  369.  
  370. Upon loading, the driver looks on the command line for the following
  371. information which may be modified by the user (note some information is
  372. required):
  373.  
  374. /Cn    Use serial communications port n where n is 1 or 2. The driver
  375.        defaults to Comm 1.
  376.  
  377. /Tn    Select digitizing tablet n defined in Appendix D of the User's
  378.        Guide. The driver defaults to tablet 2, a SummaSketch MM1 1201.
  379.  
  380. /Sn    Sets the report rate speed to n where 0=Slow, 1=Normal (default)
  381.        and 2=Fast. Reports are relative to each particular digitizer but
  382.        can affect system performance depending on other peripherals.
  383.        This generally does not need to be changed.
  384.  
  385. /An    Sets the Autodesk Device Interface software interrupt vector for
  386.        the digitizer interface such as /A121. It must be a decimal
  387.        value between 120 and 128.
  388.  
  389. Only one driver is permitted per system unless one is configured for
  390. DOS and the other for Windows. However, regardless of configuration,
  391. only one instance of the DOS driver may be loaded even if specified
  392. with port designators.  The Windows driver, VTABLET.DLL, disables the
  393. DOS driver until no longer needed. However, the DOS device driver is
  394. not required for use with Windows and need not be loaded thereby saving
  395. some memory in the DOS environment.

  398.                UNIMPLEMENTED EDITOR GRAPHICS FILE FORMATS
  399.                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  400.  
  401. Tagged Image File (TIF), Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) and Drawing
  402. Exchange Files (DXF) are not implemented in the Virtual Tablet Editor. 
  403. They will be, along with several other file formats, probably in the
  404. next major version -or- just Object Linking and Embedding (OLE). For
  405. now, the recommended file format for importing or exporting is the
  406. placeable (also known as Aldus) Windows Metafile.
  407.

  409.                  UPDATING THE VIRTUAL TABLET INTERFACE
  410.                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  411.  
  412. From time to time, updated versions of the Virtual Tablet Interface
  413. will be posted on public bulletin boards such as CompuServe, etc. If
  414. you are a registered user, you may download minor version updates and
  415. install them on your system. Note this only applies to minor, not
  416. major, version updates. You will have to upgrade major versions
  417. directly from Digitizer Technology for a modest fee.
  418.  
  419. To upgrade your registered version, download the new files to a
  420. temporary directory and run SETUP.EXE from your registered disk, NOT
  421. the downloaded demo version of SETUP.EXE. Choose "Update" in the setup
  422. options and then, when prompted, fill in the directory where the new
  423. version files are located.
  424.  
  425. Do not attempt to update drivers and utilities that have not been
  426. previously installed. Install them first from your registered disk and
  427. then update over them as described above. Also, it is not a good idea
  428. to copy the new files to your registered disk and then run SETUP.EXE.
  429. If you do, and there are any problems with the newer version, you will
  430. be unable to restore the previous version.

  433.                  REMOVING THE VIRTUAL TABLET INTERFACE
  434.                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  435.  
  436. If you need to remove part or all of the installed files from your
  437. system, select Remove instead of Install from within the SETUP.EXE
  438. utility. Removing Virtual Tablet Interface files cannot be undone with
  439. DOS 5.0 or other undelete commands. Reinstall the files instead.
  440.  
  441. You cannot remove the Windows driver if loaded or specified as the
  442. Windows mouse driver. You must manually change the SYSTEM.INI file
  443. under the [Boot] section to remove the driver, restart Windows, and
  444. then run the SETUP.EXE utility again.
  445.  
  446. NOTE: If you are removing the Virtual Tablet Interface because you are
  447. dissatisfied, please let us know the reasons why and we'll do our best
  448. to correct any problems.
